I really loved this essay. So much of what I’ve felt about classical art, photography, and cinematography has been articulated perfectly and beautifully by the author. There really is no understating how significant our ‘ways of seeing’ are to constructing not only our perception of, but experience in the world we inhabit. In a history as vast and varied as our own, multifaceted and tumultuous, unique in all its cultures yet so essentially shared, we can never downplay the significance of art that captures these moments in time, these sentiments, movements, political and economic conditions, and the human condition. Through this essay, one can reflect on the disconnect between the modern treatment of art in museums, versus what they could and arguably should mean to us as individuals. Again, I wouldn’t say to take it as prescription, but it’s definitely a worthwhile read if you’re interested at all in art, photography, cinematography, etc.
